Word Work
This week we continued to work with magic e which is added to the end of words to make the vowel sound long. We learned a noun is a person, place or thing. Our heart words this week were who, by, my, there, one and once. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’arachnid', ’incognito, ‘recipe', 'and ’galoshes’.
Reading
This month we are reading books about winter holidays around the globe. This week we read stories from Japan, Italy and England.
Math
We counted by 2's this week. We learned how to properly measure using a non standard item. This week we used paper clips. Ask your little to share the measuring rules we learned.
1. When starting place tool at the very end of the item being measured.
2. Tools should never overlap.
3. No gaps between tools.
4. The tools used to measure should be the same size.
Writer’s Workshop
We are learning how to write simple 'how to' books. This week we practiced organizing simples steps for how to paint a picture. By the end December we will each write our own 'how to' geared toward teaching a kindergartener.
In this weeks Friday folder you will find a yellow brainstorming sheet. Over the weekend please help you little create a list of ideas he/she could write a book about. Examples from past years.....How to make a PB&J, How to make a bed, How to feed your dog.
Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills
This week we continue to discussed what it means to be an upstander. We talked in detail about how important it is to do the right thing even when no one is watching.
The time between Thanksgiving and winter break can be a challenge for six and seven year olds. Lots of family activities and excitement can lead to later bed times and lots of sweets. Please be sure your little one is getting plenty of rest and good nutrition so they are ready to focus and learn at school.
Social Studies/Science
Class books
These books will are making their way to each of your homes. When a large manila envelope comes home in your littles backpack please read through the book together and return the next school day. If you would like to leave a book review on a class book that comes home. Please attach a post it note to the large envelope. The littles love to hear what you think of their creations :)
Computers
Computer will be coming home with your little on Monday. Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We will be using them daily. Please also send the charger. I am not supplied a classroom charger. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class. Changes and creation of personal backgrounds interfere with programs run at school.
