Word Work

This week we read and wrote many words with the short i. We continue to work with short a words from last week. Our heart words this week were said, the, to, of, and do. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’compliment', ’resist', ’persistent’, ‘unanimous' and ’disguise’.

Reading

This week we read books written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds. He is both the author and illustrator of his stories. We wrote a new class books patterned after his book called The DOT Keep and eye out for these creations coming home.

Math

We continue to practice counted by 1’s to 50 and 5’s and 10’s to 100. We continue to work with the 100’s chart and number line. We used each tool to help solve simple addition and subtraction problems. We practiced using tally marks to help us count by 5's.

Writer’s Workshop

We read That Book Women by Heather Henson. We learned all about packhorse librarians who delivered books in the Appalachian Mountains over 80 years ago.  We continue to discuss why books are important and how they can help us learn. Each student began their first writing project of the year. Each little is writing about a character visiting the library.

Please return small moment brainstorm sheets in Friday folders Monday if you have not alread done so. If you did not attend curriculum night these sheets are coming home in Friday folders.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed perseverance and our emotions. We discussed how in Kriletown we DO HARD THINGS. We do not give up even when something is frustrating rather we practice, reset breathing or take a break and return to the activity later. We DO NOT say "I can't" in Kriletown rather "I will try."

Science

We learned about the four seasons and continue to discuss the sun and moon. We learned the fancy word for someone who studies the sun, moon and stars is an astronomer.

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

Bedtime....A Penn State study found kids with consistent bedtimes outperformed kids who simply slept longer. They have stronger emotional control and better regulation of stress. It is not just sleep but structure. As I shared at curriculum night The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends first graders get between 9 and 12 house of sleep per night. Books then bed a winning combination!!

Star of the Week

Each of your students will get to be the star of the week in Kriletown. When the red folder comes home please help your little create a colorful poster that we might learn a little more about them. Return the folder and completed poster sometime the next week. All posters will hang in our room and then the hallway until the end of the year.

Sweatshirts

Please continue to pack a sweatshirt in your littles backpack. I have no control over our room temperature and we are always on the chilly side in Kriletown.

Progress reports

Remember folders come home on Friday. Please look at all of your students projects and sign the progress report. Folders should come back Monday with only the progress report inside.

Class books

These books will are making their way to each of your homes. When a large manila envelope comes home in your littles backpack please read through the book together and return the next school day.

Computers

Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We will be using them daily. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class. Changes and creation of personal backgrounds interfere with programs run at school.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed what it means to have courage. We learned this is a fancy word for being brave. We pointed out ways we have been brave the first two weeks of school.

Social Studies

This week we continue to work on the rules and structure of Kriletown. We discussed safe people and places. We learned the word unique means one of a kind. We learned that things we hold dear are called treasures and these artifacts tell the story of our lives. I shared pictures of Mr Krile and the BIG Krile kids, my college diplomas and my favorite story book.

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

Taking Responsibility....contributions creates competence. Kids who take on real age appropriate responsibilities grow confidence and a sense of worth. In Kriletown each of your students will take turns being the special helper. With this comes jobs they are responsible for that day.

What can parents do: Assign tasks that matter. Feeding pets, folding towels, setting the table. Find meaningful ways for your children to contribute to the running of the family.

Class books

We have written one class book so far with hopes to make 27!! These books will be making their way to each of your homes. When a large manila envelope comes home in your littles backpack please read through the book together and return the next school day. If your child's page does not appear that is because he/she was not with us the day we completed. You are more than welcome to help them complete a blank page at the back of the book.

On Time Arrival

It is very important you get your student to school at 8:47 each day. Timeliness is an example we as adults set for children. Students do not like to arrive when a class is already underway. School is over at 3:53 and it is your responsibility to be on time to pick up your student. The professionals at Logan have families of their own to get home to.

Computers

Computer will be coming home with your little in the near future.  Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We will be using them daily. Please also send the charger. I am not supplied a classroom charger. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class.

Attendance Line

When your student is absent please use the following email to report the absence log_attendance@aaps.k12.mi.us

Snack

It take a LOT of energy to be a productive learning. For that reason we have both a morning and an afternoon snack each day. Please send in two healthy snacks each day. If you would like to make a donation to the class snack box for those who forget it would be MUCH appreciated. And of course, we are a NUT free classroom.
