Kriletown Adventures - Week 37

Welcome to week thirty seven of Kriletown News. Next week will be our last newsletter of first grade. No progress reports next week.

Here is a look into our adventures this week. 

Important Date:

  • Monday, May 26 Book Giveaway collection begins - Clean off those shelves of books your littles are not longer reading.

  • Friday, May 30 - Logan Spring Carnival, 6:00pm-8:00pm

  • Tuesday, June 3 - Krile Kids book shop for summer 9:20-9:40

  • Thursday, June 5 - Logan Field Day 1:15-3:15 Kids should wear green Logan Leopard shirt, sunscreen and bring a water bottle!

  • Wednesday, June 11 - Last day of school, 11:30 dismissal

  • Wednesday, June 11 - Report Cards sent home...HAPPY SUMMER!!

Curriculum

Word Work

This week we reviewed all of the prefixes and suffixes we learned this year. Our heart words this week were school, friends, and Kriletown These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’observe', ’brilliant', 'siblings' and ’adventure'. 

Reading

This week we read some of my favorite children's books just for fun!

Math

We will be spending the remainder of first grade reviewing skills we have learned such as reading and creating graphs, work with the 100's chart and number line, time to the hour and half hour and sums of 10.

Writer’s Workshop

We started work on our diaries this week. We continued working on our memory books. It is my hope your Krile Kid has this treasure to one day share with their very own first grader.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed what it means to be BRAVE and KIND. 

Social Studies/Science

This week we discussed sun, water, fire, drug and pedestrian safety.

School Stuff:

SPRING CARNIVAL BASKET.....Thank you SO much for the generous donations to our basket. I am sure it will keep a Logan Leopard family very busy this summer.

Computers

All student computers will be collected Friday, June 6th. Please remove all stickers and be sure to return your charging cord as well.

Summer Games at the Public Library

The Ann Arbor Public Library will kick off it's Summer Games on June 11th. Your student will have more information in their Friday folder tomorrow. ANY student who attends an Ann Arbor Public School is eligible for a free library card. The libraries around town are hosting LOTS of fun events all summer long free of charge. I hope you are able to take advantage of this wonderful community resource.

Kriletown Adventures - Week 36

Welcome to week thirty six of Kriletown News. Here is a look into our adventures this week.

Curriculum

Word Work

This week we worked on pre- and re- while continuing to work with vowel teams daily. Our heart words this week were many, because, almost, true and honest. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’frustrated', ’cheer', 'emotion' and ’focus'. 

Reading

This week we read the diary series by Doreen Cronin. We made text to text, text to self and text to world connections.

Math

We will be spending the remainder of first grade reviewing skills we have learned such as reading and creating graphs, work with the 100's chart and number line, time to the hour and half hour and sums of 10.

We started out last writing  a memory book. It is my hope your Krile Kid has this treasure to one day share with their very own first grader.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed friendship. One of the most important life lessons I hope your little leaves first grade with is....life is always better with a buddy!!

Social Studies/Science

This week we learned turtles were the inspiration for the modern day bike helmet. We also discussed US symbols. 

School Stuff:

SPRING CARNIVAL BASKET.....DONATIONS NEEDED

Every year each class puts together a basket to be auctioned off at the spring carnival. Kriletown's theme is All Things Summer. If you are able to donate items for the basket it would be much appreciated. Some ideas are.....

Books both for kids and adults
Popcorn, candy etc...for a fun family movie nights
Board games
Beach toys
Soccer, basketball, football
Water bottle
Jump ropes

Think FAMILY summer fun! All donations need to be in by Wednesday, May 28th.

Curriculum

This week we worked on -less and -ful while continuing to work with vowel teams daily. Our heart words this week were round, from, their and open. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’astounding', ’coach', 'popular' and ’empty'. 

Reading

This week we read books about friendship, the love of books, being brave and kindness.

Math

We read and created bar graphs, tally graphs and picture graphs this week. We reviewed all the skills we have learned so far this year to rock our NWEA.

Writer’s Workshop

We started our end of the year memory books this week.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed what it means to forgive. We discussed how forgiveness is such an important part of being a good human.

Social Studies/Science

This week we continue to study the sun, the rocky and gas planets.

Health

Part of health in first grade is discussing what to do in an emergency. This week we discussed calling 911. I shared with your students a time last summer I had to call for ambulance after my mum fell (she is fine she had just had a knee replacement and we were being very cautious). I stressed to your littles that calling 911 should be the adults job but if ever the adult is the one hurt then need to know how. Please practice with your students your phone number and address!! They should be able to give this information to a trusted adult in times of emergency.

School Stuff:

NWEA testing next week

Students will be taking the final NWEA of the year on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Please make sure your little has gotten a good nights sleep and had a hardy breakfast each morning. Please send in a FULLY charged computer both days.

Curriculum

This week we worked on -er and -est while continuing to work with vowel teams daily. Our heart words this week were our, were, when and said. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’enthusiastic', ’diagram', 'ridiculous' and ’fiesta'. 

Reading

This week we read lots of books about mothers and family. 

Math

We spent time with 3D shapes, two digit addition and subtraction, fractions and time to the hour and half hour.

Writer’s Workshop

This week each student created a wonderful Mother's Day project.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed what it means to be helpful. We brainstormed lots of ways little people can be helpful at home and at school.

Social Studies/Science

This week we reviewed why it is important to have rules and who gets to make the rules in different situations. Our trip to the planetarium was a HUGE success!! We had such fun learning more about the sun and moon!
