Curriculum

Word Work

This week we worked with the digraphs sh and th. We also continued work with the consonant digraph ck which shows up at the end of words with a short vowel. Our heart words this week were says, she, we, they, and their. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’inspect', ’nimble', ‘vote', 'booth' and ’miniature’.

Reading

This week we read books about fall and perseverance. We spent the week reviewing all of the great books we read during our reading unit 'Why books are Important'.

Math

We worked with both addition and subtraction number stories this week. We are also working on missing addends with in 10. We also learned a great new game I HIGHLY recommend adding to your families game night called Rat a Tat Cat.

Writer’s Workshop

Students continued to work on their last narrative piece centered around a character using a book to learn something. This week we concentrated on writing a blurb.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed perseverance. We talked about how Krile Kids do not give up when something is hard. In Kriletown we take a deep breath say to ourselves "I can do this!" and jump back in. We also discussed self care and what that looks like. We discussed how exercise, eating healthy and taking time to do the things we loved are all forms of self care.

Socktober Update

I am SO excited to announce Kriletown has collected 537 pairs of socks during the month of October!! Thank you SO much to all who donated. I will be delivering to Alpha House next Tuesday. Please check Instagram and share the picture with your little.

Social Studies/Science

This week we discussed voting. I explained to the littles that in America on your 18th birthday our country gives us one of the greatest gifts will ever be given...the power to VOTE. We discussed the process and how VERY important it is for all of our voices to be heard!

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

This week your children and I talked at length about perseverance. In Iceland, uncertainty isn't feared. It's familiar. Storms cancel plans, flights, and power yet life continues. Kids grow up watching adults adapt, not spiral. They don't hear "why did this happen?" They hear, "We'll figure it out together."

In Kriletown we call this 'going with the flow.' When plans change we adapt, when the internet goes down we pivot, when it rains we have indoor recess, when we run out of time to read a great book we say "tomorrow is another day." Kids are not born resilient. They learn it one recovery at a time.

School Stuff:

HALLOWEEN CANDY is not a snack! Please send in healthy morning and afternoon snacks.

SNACK DONATIONS

We need healthy snack donations please.

Conferences

If you have not signed up for a fall conference please do so immediately. A separate email was sent with the link. Looking forward to seeing many of you on Monday!!

COLD WEATHER GEAR

Please be sure your students name is in/on EVERY piece of cold weather gear. Be mindful many of you shop at the same stores so items are identical. The only way items get home is if names are in them. Your child should know their own clothing as well. Practice at home putting on and off winter gear. Practice zipping and buttoning every item as well as the order the items should be put on. We go out in ALL types of weather so make sure your little has the appropriate clothing for the day.

ILLNESS

Kriletown has been hit with several viruses the last two weeks. As I have shared your little must be fever free unmedicated for a full 24 hours before they may return to school. That being said your student does NOT have to have a fever to be sick. If they are experiencing body aches, headache, and are complaining of being very tired keep them home.

From past newsletters....

Class books

These books will are making their way to each of your homes. When a large manila envelope comes home in your littles backpack please read through the book together and return the next school day. If you would like to leave a book review on a class book that comes home. Please attach a post it note to the large envelope. The littles love to hear what you think of their creations :)

Computers

Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We will be using them daily. Please also send the charger. I am not supplied a classroom charger. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class. He with the help of friends and relatives saved over a million and a half Yiddish keeping the stories alive for generations to come. We learned ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Math

We worked with both addition and subtraction number stories this week. Missing addends within ten was introduced. Your students should have sums within 10 solid at this point in first grade. They should be able to explain what a turn around fact (6+4 and 4+6) and doubles fact (5+5) is and give you examples of both.

Writer’s Workshop

Each student started a new book this week. In our new story our main character will learn something from a book.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed what it means to be honest. We talked about how it is always best to tell the truth as lies have a way of growing out of control.

We continue to have daily conversation on respect. What does respect look like and feel like. How do we show respect to each other and the adults in our lives.

Socktober Update

Kriletown is participating in the national Socktober campaign. Socks are the least donated items to homeless shelters. Thank you to all who have donated.

Science/Social Studies

We discussed the difference between wants and needs this week. We learned it is only after your wants are paid for and a few dollars are saved for emergencies we could treat ourselves to a want. We also discussed if it is ever ok to break a rule. We concluded that while we are expected to come to  school each day in the case of being ill, special family trips and dentist or doctors appointments it is ok to miss a few days in Kriletown.

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

This week your children and I talked about honesty. Children are little, they are not stupid. Kids can handle honesty at their developmental level. Have the hard conversations as they come up. The kids will cringe. You will stumble. But silence does not protect them. Honesty does.

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

What predicts academic success more than extra worksheets? Dinner. Columbia University found teens who shared family meals 5+ nights a week had better grades, higher, higher self-esteem and less substance use. Kids don't just eat at the table. They grow there.

In Kriletown we have classroom snack twice a day. During this time we chat. We practice conversation skills. We learn about each other, we grow!

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

Emotional intelligence is as important as reading, writing and math. I am working to build your child's emotional intelligence daily. When your child is having big emotions help them label what they feel. Fear. Shame. Embarrassment. Words help shrink big emotions down to size. Ask your child "is this a level 3 problem or a level 10?" Different feelings need different tools. Awareness comes first.  Your children have learned several deep breathing strategies to help calm both their body and mind. We have discussed sometimes we need to step away from a task, regroup then resume when calmer.
