Curriculum
Word Work
This week we learned the letters FLSZ at the end of a word after a short vowel DOUBLE. We also worked with the consonant digraph ck shows up at the end of words with a short vowel. Our heart words this week were your, want, no, and goes. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’metamorphosis', ’canteen', ‘speedy' and ’stumble’.
Reading
This week we read books about fall, being a good friend and telling the truth.
In reading workshop this week we read The Book Rescuer. This book is all about the life's work of Aaron Lansky the founder of the Yiddish Book Center. He with the help of friends and relatives saved over a million and a half Yiddish keeping the stories alive for generations to come. We learned ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
Math
We worked with both addition and subtraction number stories this week. Missing addends within ten was introduced. Your students should have sums within 10 solid at this point in first grade. They should be able to explain what a turn around fact (6+4 and 4+6) and doubles fact (5+5) is and give you examples of both.
Writer’s Workshop
Each student started a new book this week. In our new story our main character will learn something from a book.
Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills
This week we discussed what it means to be honest. We talked about how it is always best to tell the truth as lies have a way of growing out of control.
We continue to have daily conversation on respect. What does respect look like and feel like. How do we show respect to each other and the adults in our lives.
Socktober Update
Kriletown is participating in the national Socktober campaign. Socks are the least donated items to homeless shelters. The children and I discussed this is a way for us to be generous and make a difference in our community. Please consider donating if you are able. We have collected 402 pairs toward our 510 goal!! Thank you to all who have donated.
Science/Social Studies
From past newsletters....
Class books
These books will are making their way to each of your homes. When a large manila envelope comes home in your littles backpack please read through the book together and return the next school day. Your book reviews are the highlight of our day. Thank you so much for taking the time to acknowledge the author's hard work!
Computers
Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We will be using them daily. Please also send the charger. I am not supplied a classroom charger. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class. Changes and creation of personal backgrounds interfere with programs run at school.
Attendance Line
When your student is absent please use the following email to report the absence log_attendance@aaps.k12.mi.us
