Kriletown Adventures - Week 8

Welcome to week eight of Kriletown News.

Here is a look into what we have been learning during week 8 of our Kriletown adventures.

Before we jump into this weeks learning I wanted to share with you an observation. Each day I open the door and greet your children. Each one of them is smiling and has something to share with me. As they unpack they visit and giggle with friends before getting to the first learning activity. Your children are SO happy! It warms my heart they are excited to spend the day together.

Curriculum

Word Work

This week we read and continue to write many words with various short vowel families and consonant blends. Our heart words this week were do, which, are, and was. These are words that do not follow traditional spelling rules. Our FANCY vocabulary words were ’greeting', ’camouflage', ‘separate' and ’crunchy’.

Reading

This week we read books about scarecrows.

We learned all about bookmobiles this week. We read Ready to Fly all about Sylvia Townsend known as the bookmobile ballerina. Ask your child to share this wonderful story of learning something new by reading great books.

Math

We worked with both addition and subtraction number stories this week. We created numbers using base ten blocks. Coach Natalie came in and taught us a new sums of 10 math game.

Writer’s Workshop

Students are writing great stories about characters who learn something from a book. We are concentrating on transition words, capitals and proper punctuation.

Social/Emotional Learning - Life Skills

This week we discussed the fancy word for brave COURAGE! We discussed there are many ways to be brave each day. We also learned the importance of moving our bodies each day. Exercise is key to keeping our bodies and brains healthy.

Socktober Update

Kriletown is participating in the national Socktober campaign. Socks are the least donated items to homeless shelters. The children and I discussed this is a way for us to be generous and make a difference in our community. Please consider donating if you are able. We have collected 262 pairs toward our 510 goal!! Thank you to all who have donated.

Science/Social Studies

In science we were SO lucky to have a hunter's moon this last week. Thank you so much for those of you who shared the moon with your little. Thank you to all who sent me pictures.

In social studies we discussed fair is not always equal. Each Krile Kid gets what they need to be successful each day. We also started a discussion about wants and needs. We learned we take care of our needs first and then wants.

Parent Corner

Each week I will share ideas of ways you can aid in your child's education. Soft skills modeled at home have the most impact on life long learning.

What predicts academic success more than extra worksheets? Dinner. Columbia University found teens who shared family meals 5+ nights a week had better grades, higher, higher self-esteem and less substance use. Kids don't just eat at the table. They grow there.

In Kriletown we have classroom snack twice a day. During this time we chat. We practice conversation skills. We learn about each other, we grow!

Please continue with the book reviews!! It is one of the highlights of the day reading what our grown ups thing of all of our hard work :)

Computers

Please be sure to send the computer FULLY charged each day. We use them daily. Please also send the charger. I am not supplied a classroom charger. Please do not let your littles change the settings on their computers. This is against the user agreement and poses a big problem when using them in class. Changes and creation of personal backgrounds interfere with programs run at school.
